I am going to share some learnings from observing how our bootcamp students are getting jobs.Since I interact with them daily and really discuss tons of situations, I get the pulse of industry at the grass root level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I’ve trained several students who made more money than me in their first job than I was currently making :( Was I jealous, hell ya. I am not a saint, I am a person with feelings. So how did that happen? I have seen this happening not once, not twice, but several times this scenario keeps on repeating. After several rounds of self-loathing and hating that person and hating life in general. I dissected the situation to find the RCA (Root cause analysis). You see, I am a great trainer but a terrible salesperson. First I could not communicate my value to the interviewer effectively. I know a lot of shit but the interviewer does not know that. How will he know anyway? He's not a mind reader. So you have to be a very effective salesperson. You are a product. Package it nicely and put yourself on a shelf where everyone can see. Use the STAR and SOAR framework to answer questions. This has been a game changer. Even Amazon recommends using STAR pattern. Here is an actual email to one of our students that got an interview recommending using the STAR / SOAR framework. I feel bad about discovering these frameworks very recently . Second Most students are fresh and have momentum on their side I have a term for them, “THEY ARE HOT RIGHT NOW’’--“HOT OFF THE PRESS” Once you are experienced, you get lazy. Students are hungry and they have been studying day and night for months. They do better in coding tests and most fundamental questions, whereas experienced people like me have family and other commitments which makes studying almost impossible unless you are one hell of a ruthless career chaser. Bottom line Inexperience has its own advantages. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT ARE THE RULES ? First rule is that there are no rules. Every company is different. Each company has hundreds of groups with managers who come from different backgrounds and mindsets. Some are rigid and some are very futuristic. Most students I have seen tend to generalize and stereotype some companies. Ex : Getting into FAANG companies , you must be a master of DSA and Algorithms . This is true in most cases but I have seen candidates getting in who have no idea of Big O notation. Another example You must have excellent communication skills to get a job. I have seen candidates who could barely communicate but were excellent technically getting hired . Another classic one You must have a 1 page / 2 page resume . Again does not matter . If you can convey everything in one page , good for you , If not , no worries, Take more space. Don’t worry too much about these useless, non productive details . Sachins Take ---> I tend to prefer a longer resume due to several years of experimentation with students . Just like long form content performs better in Google SEO , long form resumes perform better . It's a wild wild west and each person in the hiring process whether its recruiter , manager or interviewer interprets and paints the world from his own perspective and experiences. Remember , there is one correct answer to all questions and that is …... “ IT DEPENDS”” ← Always the right answer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RESUME IS GATEWAY TO JOB - WORK ON IT DILIGENTLY If you are like me, a sane individual; you probably hate working on your resume. I have yet to come across a person who loves to update resumes. It's one of those things we know is important but nobody wants to do it. It's that white elephant in the room. We all see and ignore it. This is where you can gain a significant advantage over the competition. You must spend an ample amount of time building your resume before you hit the market. Once your resume is out, it's hard to control where it will end up. You must outwork the competition.Scoring points on resumes are easy-picking, low-hanging fruit. Several professionals on Linkedin would happily review your resume. It would be even worth spending money to get your resume professionally reviewed. Most people I know, undersell themselves. In our Bootcamp, I ask everyone to spend a day going through email, jobs, classes to come up with some good points. I even ask them to talk to former colleagues to discuss projects they worked on. You need to have faith and believe you’re better than your competition. Most students don’t remember the details and they are too uncomfortable to work on it. This is one of the things I preach but never practice! God, I hate working on resumes! HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE RESUMES YOU CAN USE These are in word format so you can easily copy paste points. I know you little troublemakers too well :) If you little cheaters do copy some points , Please make sure to read it and customize / personalize it with your own project / experience. UI / Full Stack Resume Samples UI / React Angular Resume One of several successful Bootcamp Student Resume ( Got job in 50 days ) DATA Analyst Resume Sample Here is one --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BE IN THE RIGHT FIELD I cannot tell you how many student resumes I get in a day who are not in IT struggling to get a job. Most of struggling students are in mechanical, industrial, chemical, hardware, finance, MBA, supply chain I am going to say that most of you will not like it. Cut your losses and get into IT, Right now. I have a friend who did Chemical Engineering from a Top institute in India and Masters in Chemical Engineering from Villanova University. He was top of the class in both. Could not get a job. What did he do? Took training in Informatica and got a job in 2 months. I am talking about this incident like 17 years back. This still holds true now. Don’t waste a minute in non IT. It's a simple equation. If you are on F1, there is plenty of talent available in the form of Green cards and citizens. So why would any company spend money on visa, documentation and go through all the hassles to hire you It's a simple equation. Supply and demand If you are in a field which has more demand than supply, you will get a job even if you are not the greatest. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USE YOUR INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION Most of the students I’ve come across are always cribbing on why it's so hard and there are no advantages of being an F1 student I beg to differ. Let me tell you a story. My relative in India has 3 best friends. One of them is in the US . 2 of them are in India One of the friend's sons goes to the USA for a bachelors. Guess what. who helps him find a job, You got it right. Yes the 3 best friends helped each other's sons find jobs. Use your international connections, Everyone I know, knows someone in US. Your friend, friends brother, sister, sister in law, uncle ,aunty. My point is simple, if you work this angle, you will most likely get a response due to family pressure Networking with random people on Linkedin is less effective as there is no connection or bonding. Use your connections wisely. We tell our bootcamp students to make a list of connections they have and filter those which are in US. Thank me later, and contact them now :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAFFING COMPANIES, VENDORS AND MSP. Most people are unaware that companies hire staffing companies such as randstad, teksystems, kforce etc to find talent. Also large companies have large projects for outsourcing providers such as TCS, Cognizant, IBM, Wipro, Accenture. Let me be clear. If you don’t have experience, you will not make it via staffing companies. Period. Most companies can easily find freshers so why pay third party staffing companies for talent. Positions typically go to staffing companies only when the client is not able to find resources. These are typically hard to find talent Most staffing companies will be looking for 3+ years of experience. Few times, they do look for junior positions but that would be only 10 to 15% of time. It's actually easier to get an outsourcing provider. Hiring cycle is short. If you look at the top 100 H1B providers, You will see names of mostly outsourcing companies after FAANG + companies. Benefits of going through outsourcers and staffing companies are that don't give a shit how good you are as long as they make placement fees . We have some connections and technical recruiters literally hands us over questions that are going to be asked . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAKE HELP FOR INTERVIEWS FROM YOUR FRIENDS. There, I said it . If you have take home work or interview that does not require video, Ask a friend to sit next to you and help you out with homework or tests. In our bootcamp, we help each other with homework, tests, opportunities and everything in between. Collectively we all win. This is one of the big reasons our students get placed quickly. Collective action. A support system to have each other’s back. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME GAME From my experience, most students don’t have referrals and relationships. No matter what the world portrays you about networking, relationships, etc the truth is most students find jobs through just applying randomly everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the power of referrals and indeed it works. Nobody in the right state of mind will question that hypothesis. But since most students are young and new to the country, they haven’t built that kind of relationship with people who are employed. Most of the candidate's peers are also job seekers. That does not help much. So what is the alternative? Apply as much as you can. I have come across students who apply to 4 to 5 positions a day. That’s not going to cut it buddy. One more important thing. You have to apply for positions that require 10 to 30 minutes to fill, don’t be lazy and select applications with the easy apply option. That’s what most students do and guess what those easy apply positions get 200 to 500 resumes. It's going to be hard to stand out among 500 people no matter how much of a rockstar you think you are. Most candidates are lazy including me, We want an easy way out, which means applying to positions that can be done in under a minute. If you want to have any chance, you will have to fill up those long-ass applications. Yes it's boring and it will put you to sleep in a few minutes but those applications are the ones that get results as your competition is far less. Our Wynisco marketers apply to more than 50 positions for every student, every single day. Our response rate is around 2 to 3 percent. That means out of 50 applications we get only one or two responses a day. It's terrible but better than zero. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FISHING IS BEST WHERE FEWEST GO We have diversified our bootcamp student marketing efforts. Linkedin is a very effective but very crowded channel. We have found applying on company websites to be most time consuming but most effective.Try to find some different channels that are less crowded . For example , for our bootcamp students we target some positions in Venture backed companies ,we have targeted largest web app companies , recently funded companies . HERE is the list of companies that got funded recently that you can target . Recently funded companies typically will ramp up hiring. We target these companies as they are typically hiring for multiple positions.Even if they don’t find you fit for one role, they will have some other roles that you might fit into. Here is the list of largest web development companies in the USA. Typically students are not aware of these and hence competition is less . These companies tend to be smaller and are very accessible . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOOLING As they say , you cannot cut a forest using axe . At Wynisco we use this automation tools heavily to make life easy. MAIL MERGE - YAMM Job Search is a tedious process . Make it easy with your tools . For example we send custom reminder messages to each of you via this google sheets add on . Phantombuster How we use it -Invite everyone for event in connection -Collect all the comments from the post -Collect Linkedin Group members Here is post that explains how to contact find and contact recruiters Extensions to find email addresses on Linkedin We use Lusha . Lets try to find someone. Not 100% but gets it right 90% of time Finally if you have a small budget , use outsourcers from south asian countries that can help you out with applying for jobs. They typically charge 3 to 5$/ hr . For an investment for 300 to 400$ /month . You can pretty much get someone full time for month to help you apply, that way you can do more important work such as studying ,writing custom emails etc and leave the manual task to outsourcers. Use website like upwork , guru etc to find people.
